What a favicon is

A favicon is the small icon that identifies a website in the browser tab, in bookmarks and in the browsing history. On a phone, the same icon appears when the site is added to the home screen.

Because it is seen at a very small size, a favicon works best as a simple mark or part of a logo, rather than the full logo with its text.

Recommended favicon sizes

How to install the generated files

Once you have generated the package, it takes three steps:

  1. Unzip the file and upload its contents to your site's root folder, so that they open directly after the domain, for example /favicon.ico.
  2. Paste the code below inside the <head> section of every page.
  3. Publish the change and reload the site. Browsers cache favicons for a long time, so the old icon may stay visible for a while.

ICO versus PNG

favicon.ico is a container that holds several sizes in one file: here, 16×16, 32×32 and 48×48. Many tools and browsers look for it automatically in the root folder, so it is worth always having one.

PNG files are separate images of a single size. Modern browsers prefer them when the code names them, and Apple and Android use their own larger PNG icons. The two formats complement each other, which is why the package contains both.

Privacy: your image never leaves your device

The whole generator runs in your browser. Your image is processed locally, is not sent to a server and is not saved. When you close or reload the page, it is gone.

Frequently asked questions

What favicon sizes do I need?

For a modern site, you need a favicon.ico with 16×16, 32×32 and 48×48 sizes, 16×16 and 32×32 PNG files, a 180×180 Apple Touch icon, and 192×192 and 512×512 Android icons. The generator creates all of them at once.

Can I create a favicon from a PNG or SVG?

Yes. The generator accepts PNG, JPG, WebP and SVG files up to 10 MB. A square image or an SVG gives the best result, because they stay clear at small sizes.

Does PrintVes upload my image?

No. Your image is processed in the browser on your device and is not sent to a server. No registration is needed either.

How do I add the favicon to my website?

Upload the files to your site's root folder and paste the HTML code provided into the <head> section of your pages. If your site runs on a website builder, look for its site icon setting and upload the file it asks for.

What is the difference between favicon.ico and PNG icons?

favicon.ico holds several sizes in one file and is found automatically by many tools. PNG icons are separate files of a single size, which browsers and mobile devices use when the code names them.
